EURO MPs from the north west insist they have nothing to fear from a fraud investigation following allegations by former Oldham MP Chris Davies of "OUTRAGES" abuses of expenses by some MEPs. The Liberal Democrat who is one of nine MEPs representing the north west, called in the EU fraud squad to probe possible misuse of allowances after seeing a secret report of a random audit. He says he is unable to give more details about what he saw in the report, which he describes as "DYNAMITE" and says he is not able to say whether British MEPs are involved. But he says the findings of an investigation into the possible misuse of £105 MILLION in funds, could be much more significant than recent staff expenses scandels in Britain. Labour MEPs representing the north west say they cannot rule out abuse of the system but insist there own claims are above board. Arlene McCarthy said: " As a group we hand over our accounts every year to an independant auditor who confirms and verifies that their is full compliance with European rules." The MEP says she claims for four members of staff - three full time and one trainee.
Colleague Gary Titley, whose wife is employed as his secretary, said: " We have nothing to fear." He stressed: " Some people might wonder why my wife is my secretary, and the answer is that first and foremost she is fully qualified and bilingual."
